This year the Wayne State University Planetarium gave out its first annual awards at the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit, held at the Cobo Center in Detroit from March 13th-16th. "As a center for astronomy outreach, we are always looking for ways to support and celebrate students who excel in astronomy and related fields," said Planetarium Director Megan McCullen. She continued, "Wayne State developed a Bachelor's degree in Astronomy in 2011, and we want to encourage students to consider careers related to Space science."

The Planetarium's award is for Outstanding Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Space Science.

Dr. Matthew Barrett, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, was one of the Award Judges. "I was very impressed by the work of the students and their infectious enthusiasm for science. I hope many of them will go on to rewarding careers, making valuable contributions to STEM research."

This year, both awardees were students from Novi Senior High School, where they were sponsored by Physics teacher James Di Dio.

First place was awarded to Aditya Iyer for his project Finding The Most Efficient Orbit Using Einstein's Theory of General Relativity.

Second place was awarded to Sujit Lakshmikanth for his project Mars Exploration Zone Map Design for the Manned Mission to Mars.
